LAND USE AND CAMPING FEES
As many visitors know, NMW has strived to keep user fees at a reasonable level for 40 years. Recent increases in propane and gasoline, plus the 25% increase in Maine's minimum wage over the last few years has had a significant impact on operating costs. Coupled with the 10 year trend of fewer visitors coming to northern Maine, we were faced with either dramatically reducing checkpoint and campsite services or increasing some user fee categories.
As a long term resolution to address future expenses, NMW has made advancements to reduce energy costs by converting from propane generated power to solar power at many locations and has plans to replace some manned checkpoints with electronic gates.
